My new mantra
It's been 3 days since I ran the Kentucky Derby Half Marathon.
I ran this same race 2 years ago and the outcome was much worse. Largely in part because I drank heavily the night before the race. Beer, not water. This year I chose to behave myself, after all, I had been planning since January on having this race be my new Half PR. What I wasn't planning on was my slovenly, running ways to rear their ugly head.
Finish Time: 2:05 PR!
Race: crowded elbows to assholes (I'm sorry but it's true)
Course Pros: running through Churchill Downs, home of the Ky Derby
Course Cons: 12 miles of neighborhoods and LACK OF WATER
My best running friend, Tami, and I had been hatching a plan since January, when we smashed a new 10 mile record for ourselves, that we would tear this race apart. Sub 9 min miles the entire way. I think this might have been doable but I came down with strep and neither of us were putting in the speed work we needed to get this done. So, about a week ago we decided that we would shoot for a time between 2 and 2:05. I new it would be easy for her but would take work on my part.
I have no clue why I can't straighten this picture out.
Before the race we met up with my friend Julia from Utah! You guys know her! She's awesome and so supportive! Shortly after we visited, we nestled ourselves into corral C. It was suppose to be about 80 out but felt really comfy at the start. It had been awhile since I ran a corporate race that was packed!! We were close like cattle. The gun when off and it was like upright body wrestling and trying not to trip. Walkers, attention walkers, please don't hang out up front. Not cool.
First mile was 9:44. Not nearly good enough but I figured we had been people- hopping the entire way. More like a game of Frogger than a half marathon. Second mile, 9:30. Closer to where we needed to be. Third mile 9:20. Ok, a little better. But then, by mile 4, I was back to 9:40. I was so mad at myself. Here we were almost halfway through this thing and I was "easy like Sunday morning". Tami knew I was frustrated at myself. She would glance over and ask me how I was feeling. I was fine, just not giving it all that I had or all that I needed for us to hit our time mark.
At mile 6, I took out my GU, put the ENTIRE thing in my mouth, ran over to a water table to shoot it down and they HAD NO WATER. WTF!? So, I did what came natural. I went in search of water. There were volunteers there and I had a mouthful of GU that needed help washing down. I went behind their tables and over to their volunteer cars. I finally found a fire hydrant that had a water hose hooked to it. I still can't believe that happened to me. At the later water stops they found it suffice to put about 2" of liquid in a cup.
Ummmm, I'm sorry water stop volunteers but 2" of liquid in the bottom of a cup isn't enough to quench the thirst of an All American athlete like myself. I felt like I was sucking cotton balls and licking sand each time I left a water stop. It was making me unhappy. Yeah, sad runner face.
So, as the miles wore on, we would yo - yo between 9:40 and 9:20. I was metaphorically driving Miss Daisy to the finish line. Finally, Tami at mile 8, looks back at me and says " if we wanna make time, we're gonna need to hurry up from here on out." She was right. I told her to get in front of me and run and that I would follow. We had work to do and I needed to get over myself and run. 9:20 would be our slowest mile from there to the finish, with our final mile being 8:15. I wanted to barf and pee my pants at mile 11 but neither took place. We finished strong and I learned that I can actually run if I set my mind to it. I thanked her profusely for taking control of the race and control over my brain and forcing us to that finish line. She knows how to bring out the best in me.
Look, me and a chicken, and we're sideways.
HAHAHA, look, this picture is sideways too!! Tami and I, sideways in crime.
Next stop, Flying Pig Half Marathon this Sunday with my friend Michael! I'm so excited!!

Congrats to you! Love a good PR! That really stinks on the water, though. It amazes me that a race organization can put together something like that and forgo the most important part!!
ReplyDeleteCongrats! That's awesome :-)
ReplyDeleteThat's crazy about the water stations. You probably would have had an even bigger PR if you didn't have to go out in search of water! Awesome job getting it done, though!!
ReplyDeleteI'm seriously disappointed you didn't have a great experience with this race because its on my bucket list argh!!! Who doesn't have water either? Despite all this, glad to know that you got a huge PR :)
ReplyDeleteI considered doing this race. I am glad a chose Madison, WI instead. Congrats on the PR. You can definitely improve that time with a race where you don't have to search for water.
ReplyDeleteNot have water sucks. I'm running the mini500 half this weekend and it's supposed to be hot!! I hope they have enough water by the time I come through. I promised to stay with a lady who's in her 60's and it's going to be slooow for me :(
ReplyDeleteomggg. we had like the same thoughts about the water/gu situation. i pretty much never want to have a throat coated in gu without water ever again. not cool.
ReplyDeletelove the sideways in crime action ;) you all are awesome and i was so dang excited to see you both! wish we could have had more time but im just grateful to have seen you. thanks for the kind words. you are too nice! i think i talked to my brother about how awesome you are for doing the 70.3 for the first 2 miles. he probably got sick of that and was thinking "cool...lets get back to helping me now." haha!
congrats on the PR and have a freaking blast at the PIG!
Way to go!!! You are awesome!!!
ReplyDeleteAlso, I LOVE Game of Thrones. I wish I had HBO so I could watch the second season. I have to settle for DVDs. Bleah. The books are awesome too! Dany is my favorite character. I love her to bits.
WOOOHOOOO!!!!! I am so excited that you did end up PR'n YAY you - you're on a roll.
ReplyDeleteand I have never watched GOT but I've heard the book is great!
Dude. Did you take up residence in PRCity??? Also- you are gorgeous. Good luck at your next half! I would be proud of those splits if I were you. I'm a stupid runner and have yet to negative split a race- or a training run for that matter!!!
ReplyDeleteI loved reading this and your captions under the photos made me laugh. I just wanted to let you know that I am so happy that I completed my first 5k, first 10 miler, and my second half beside you. You have truely inspired me and helped me with running that I can't thank you enough. Next derby we will be on a mission!! :)
ReplyDeleteHilarious on the sideways pics, haha.
ReplyDeleteCongrats on the PR! Bummer about the lack of water on the course!
Oh, and that is awesome that you got to meet Julia!
ReplyDeleteI hate that I just missed you!! I agree about the water - UGH. I had the same problem. And one water stop had nothing but PowerAde and I thought "really? I need High Quality H20". Way to bust out the end there, geeze. Good luck at the Pig, I'm so jealous!
ReplyDeleteno water is a big no no
ReplyDeleteI have no tolerance for this
congrats on the PR!!!! BRAVO!
Way to go on the PR!! The description of a mouth full of GU and no water made me think of those old SNL commercials where they drink the cookie dough gatorade - ugh. I'm a big water girl and I don't carry it with me so I depend on it being available during a race. I'm so so impressed with your finish anyway. Good luck in Cinci!
ReplyDeleteCongrats on your PR. Seems like if you put your mind to anything these days you're unstoppable. :)
ReplyDeletecongrats on your new PR!! that's crazy about the water stations, don't they know who you are?!? hope to see you at the pig!!
ReplyDeleteCONGRATS!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteI wish I could write sideways to match your pictures :). Congratulations on that awesome PR, girl...I am super freaking proud of you!!! Good luck with the Pig this weekend and have a blast with Michael! :)
ReplyDeleteCOngrats on the PR!!! That is awesome!!! Enjoy your time in Ohio
ReplyDeleteAwesome job on the PR! In the future, don't drive from fire hydrants. They often contain non-potable water :)
ReplyDeletePR!!!!!!YIPPEEEE!!!!!!!!

Glad you're as strong as a mule. I will try not to call you the other name for mule.
ReplyDeleteSomehow it doesn't mean the same thing to call you strong ass. Would that refer to muscle or odor? I digress.
Always nice to be able to PR. Sounds like you had a great running partner. Way to finish strong (as a mule)
If you need some tips on rotating pictures, let me know. :-)
